Sam Kerr Artist | Contemporary Painter

I’m Sam Kerr, and I am a contemporary artist based in Carlisle, Cumbria. I’ve been focused on my art for several years now. I don’t believe in sticking to just one subject, as I prefer to paint whatever captures my interest in the moment. That is why my portfolio is such a mix, featuring everything from Cumbrian landscapes and local buildings to animals and aircraft.

I first started my journey with the help and guidance of Victoria Newstead, who was instrumental in getting me started with painting. Although I don’t have formal training, I believe art is all about expression, exploration, and authenticity. Since those early days, I have developed a style that is built on energy, colour, and a real love for the physical nature of paint.

While my work often looks quite spontaneous, I actually put a lot of thought into planning my pieces before the brush even touches the canvas. I like to have a solid plan in place so that once I start, I can let the shapes develop naturally. For me, it is about capturing the feel and the energy of a subject rather than trying to create a perfect copy.

Life at home is busy and always on the move, and I try to bring that same spirit into my studio. My family’s support has been invaluable, giving me the freedom to explore this path and see where the paint takes me. Every painting is a bit of an adventure, and I love seeing how a planned idea transforms into a finished story on the canvas.

If you’re interested in seeing my work, I invite you to explore my portfolio, where you’ll find both recent and past paintings. Through my work, I aim to share my personal journey and artistic exploration as a contemporary painter.
